A Day in the Life of a Photographer: My Workflow, Routines, & Creative Process
Hi there! I’m so glad you stopped by. Today I thought I’d pull back the curtain on what a typical day for me looks like in my life as a photographer.
So let me paint the picture, The day before a shoot I always make sure I have my batteries charged including back-ups. I would be actually petrified if I showed up to a shoot with a dead camera, so its one of my must double checks to do. I also always clear my SD cards before each shoot, I like to do this because it can ensure that I’m going to have a fresh start feeling to the present shoot and have all the space on my SD card ready to go. I always think about which lens I’ll want to start out with and have that one on and attached. I’ll also make sure they are cleaned and spotless.
The day of the shoot I go back over these things and make sure I didn’t miss anything. I’ll look over my clients mood board (if they sent me one) and go over the questionnaire answers that I have clients fill out during booking. I like feeling prepared, confident and aligned with my clients vision.
During shoots I focus on lighting, natural light is my go-to, but I always carry a reflector just in case. The reflector is used to simply bounce light onto my subject. I will follow up with focusing on composition, it’s so so so important to me, because this is where I get to play with angles and framing. This can make a photo tell a 1000 words. The way a photo is framed, for example, foliage peeking in around the subject/client, and the client is focused on something either in the distance or if they came with someone they can be looking at them and you can catch a super candid reaction. It can make this person look like they are in their element, it tells a story to say the least.
During shoots I make it my mission, from the second we shake hands, meet and greet, that I show how comfortable I am and let it be contagious. I feel like being self aware, showing confidence, and willing to be yourself right out the gate opens up a safe space for others.
After a shoot I can’t wait to get home, I do so much hyping clients up and knowing what I have is going to make them feel special, I can’t wait to download my galleries and get to work on editing so I can share them with the client. It can take me 3-5 days to share a gallery or up to 2-3 weeks all depending on what the shoot was for. I honestly, have a lot of time on my hands. So it’s easy for me to get a lot done in a good time frame.
I try not to stay up too late editing haha but sometimes I get sucked in and next thing I know it’s 1am or something ridiculous like that. Now, don’t get me wrong I do make sure I take a moment to relax and unwind after a shoot, I’ll get home, set my stuff down, spend some time with my lovely boyfriend. I’ll show him some of my favorites from a shoot and get his feedback as well. It’s nice to get a quick outside opinion.
Well, if you made it this far on my very first blog post EVER! Thank you. I’m looking forward to posting more of these! Take care, and remember you’re a beautiful soul.
